Early Years as a Urologist:
When Dr. Christopher Capoccia was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on March 16, 1965, he had no idea he would one day be a world-renowned urologist. As a child, Capoccia enjoyed playing sports and excelled in math and science classes. However, when he was just 15 years old, Capoccia was diagnosed with a kidney infection and required surgery to remove his infected kidney. After his successful surgery, Capoccia made a commitment to himself that if he ever recovered from his illness and regained his health, he would become a doctor like his parents.
Capoccia completed undergraduate studies at the University of Kansas followed by medical school at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC). After completing his residency at UMKC and an additional year of training at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), Capoccia began fellowship training in urology at the University of California-San Francisco (UCSF). In 2002, Capoccia relocated to Seattle to take up a position as an associate professor of urology at UW Medicine.
While working as an assistant professor at UW Medicine, Capoccia developed an interest in using laparoscopic surgery for treating prostate cancer. After completing several landmark trials using this approach – including the first trial to show significant long-term benefits for patients undergoing radical prostatectomy who received radiation therapy – Capoccia became known as “the father of robotic prostate cancer treatment.” In 2009

“The best thing about my job is that I get to see patients every day who are facing some kind of medical challenge,” Dr. Capoccia says. “Some of them are dealing with serious illnesses, others have just been dealt a tough hand in life by a car accident or illness in the family. But no matter what their situation, I always try my best to provide them with honest and unbiased advice.”
Dr. Capoccia is also an advocate for new technology in the field of urology. He frequently uses state-of-the-art procedures such as minimally invasive surgery and laser treatments to treat various urological problems. He believes that these technologies offer patients significant benefits over traditional surgical methods, and he is proud to be one of the few urologists in the country who routinely uses them.
“Technology has come a long way since I first started practicing medicine,” Dr. Capoccia says. “I love being able to use cutting-edge techniques to help my patients feel better faster than ever before.”
