Langtang Trek Route
Langtang Trek adventure begins with an 8-9 hour drive from Kathmandu to Gatlang. You can take a private jeep to Gatlang. As soon as the Jeep departs from Kathmandu, the road climbs over the ridge offering majestic views of Ganesh Himal, Manaslu, and Annapurna. The condition of the highway is extremely rocky and rough with tons of potholes and small ditches. You’ll be driving alongside the Trishuli River for most of the day. Driving past the bustling town of Trishuli, the road leads towards Dhunche, the administrative center of Rasuwa District. Make sure to keep your TIMS card and National Park Permit in an easily accessible place as you’ll need to show them at the Park Gate right before Dhunche.
After driving for another hour downhill from the town of Dhunche, you’ll reach Syabru Besi. Following the Trishuli River and touring over rough roads, the road guides you into the Langtang National Park where you will immediately notice the remoteness of the human settlement at a high altitude. With the terraced hill surrounding, the Tamang settlement area- Gatlang, is a well-known region for friendly locals and heart-warming hospitality.
Following the trail to Nagthali, we leave Chilime. Along the path, we pass by a dense forest and might encounter the Nepal Gray Langur Monkeys. After walking for some time, we reach open grassland with amazing views of the Himalayas such as Ganesh Himal, Langtang range, and the Sanjen ranges. After passing this grassland we will reach Nagthali. Nagthali was once used as a popular meditation center for the local monks and priests.
With a descending walk, for about an hour we reach Thuman. Thuman is one of the Tamang villages which are heavily influenced by the Tibetan culture. The people are friendly and love to sing and dance. Later on, we continue walking through rhododendron forests and meadows towards Briddhim, another Tibetan-influenced Tamang community on the lap of Langtang Himal. The trail to Briddhim in springtime is beautiful as the whole rhododendron forest blooms. In Briddhim, we enjoy the traditional local cuisines and take part in cultural practices.
The trail ascends to Khanjum village and passing through the Chortens, Mani walls, and prayer flags along the way, we make our way up further to Sherpa Gaun. We get an amazing view of the Langtang ranges from Sherpa Gaun where we are welcomed by the warm hospitality of the Sherpa people. Today is a strenuous day as we have to climb about 1,000 meters. We start by climbing up a steep forest slope to the Langtang River. After ascending for some time, we cross a stream and climb past several water-driven prayer wheels to the large settlement of Langtang. Langtang is one of the oldest villages along this trekking route and the view from here is more spectacular as we get closer to the mountains.
Along the path to Kyanjin Gompa, you can see the wonderful view of Langtang Lirung. The trail passes through the largest Mani wall, made from stone and with prayers written on them various inscriptions carved on them, and many more. After crossing some rivers, we reach Kyanjin Gompa(4,500m) which is the last destination of our trek. You can either rest for the day or explore Tserko Ri which is the highest elevation point i.e. 5000m from sea level. From Tserko Ri you can observe the magnificent views of the mountains, glaciers and the Langtang Valley.
