Self-esteem and self-confidence are often used interchangeably. Sometimes it’s a case of self-esteem versus self-confidence. However, they are quite different from each other. While self-esteem refers to one’s sense of self and how one interacts with the world, self-confidence is confidence in your skills and abilities. You can be self-confident and still have low self-esteem.

What is self-esteem?

Selfesteem helps guide one’s feelings, behaviors, and thoughts. It simply refers to what you think or how you feel about yourself. Self-esteem is introspective and determines how you see the world and others. Esteem was derived from the Latin word “aestimare,” which means to estimate, appraise or rate. Self-esteem refers to how much or how little you value yourself. Selfesteem can be built or destroyed through life experiences and the relationship one has with others. Self-esteem doesn’t come from skills and can’t be seen because it is within you. However, self-confidence can reflect on your attitude and how you approach daily challenges. When you genuinely believe in your goodness, you build up your self-esteem.

Self-esteem is best achieved in adolescence. Affectionate and loving parents who support their children and validate their emotions are more than likely to raise children with healthy self-esteem. Self-esteem mainly comes from people’s interaction with their environment and families. On the other hand, children who weren’t privileged to get such treatment from their parents may have low self-esteem and feel less worthy. Self-esteem can be considered the core of a person’s identity and can determine the level of success they will achieve in the future. Self-esteem is the assessment of your value, and you can be confident about various areas in your life but still have unhealthy self-esteem.

Self-confidence

Self-confidence has to do with identifying the significance of a job or skill you did well. Self-confidence is about trusting in your abilities and being confident in your skills in specific areas of life. It is about trusting your ability to achieve your goals and much more. Confidence was derived from the Latin word “fidere,” which means to trust. You have to trust in yourself and your abilities to build your self-confidence. You could join a personal development workshop in Edmonton to work on building your self-confidence, self-esteem, and other character traits. It is not advisable to lean on self-confidence alone because self-esteem also matters when building your personality.
