Kiya Cole, author of “Parenting on the Edge: How to Raise Kids Who Are Comfortable in Their Own Skin” and co-host of “The View,” sat down with NBC News’ Carson Daly to talk about her new book and parenting advice. Kiya said that she wanted to write a book that was relatable for all mothers, because she knows that not everyone has the same experiences or circumstances when they become parents. She also emphasized the importance of communicating with your children, both verbally and nonverbally.
Kiya has spoken out about her experience with online bullying before; her daughter was the target of some nasty comments on social media before Kiya took matters into her own hands. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Kiya talked about how she responds when her daughter tells her about these incidents. She urges other mothers to be there for their kids and reassure them that they are loved no matter what.
Kiya has always been a strong advocate for body confidence, self-love, and loving yourself enough to accept who you are flaws and all. She discusses this message in depth in her book as well as on “The View.” Herpanics have struggled with self-esteem for years due to the constant criticism we face from society; Kiya wants to help change that by showing moms that they are enough just the way they are.

Blog Outline:
Welcome to my blog! I’m Kiya Cole, and I’m a mom of two young kids. In this blog, I’ll be talking about parenting, fame, and my new book.
Parenting is one of the biggest roles in our lives. It’s hard work but it’s so rewarding when we see our kids grow into amazing adults. Fame is something that comes and goes. Some people love it and some people hate it. But no matter what people say, fame is something that comes with a lot of responsibilities. My new book is all about balancing fame and parenting. It’s called “The Fame Diaries: A Mom’s Guide to Surviving the Insatiable Pursuit of Stardom.”

When Kiya Cole was just a child, she dreamed of being famous. Now as an adult, she’s living her dream–and it doesn’t always go as planned. In her new book, “Parenting on the Rise,” Cole discusses the ups and downs of parenting in the age of social media and fame. In this excerpt, she talks about balancing raising children with maintaining a public persona.
“I think that when you have kids and you’re trying to maintain some level of privacy, it becomes harder,” Cole says. “But I also think that there are so many blessings that come with having a platform…You can do something to make somebody’s day or to help them learn something.”
Cole has found success as an author and speaker, but she knows that parenting is still hard work. She credits her mother for teaching her how to be frank and open with her children. “I try to model that–especially with my son–of being authentic and being real with them,” she says. “And I think they respond best to honesty.”
Her New Book, “Girl Code”
Kiya Cole is an author, speaker, and parenting expert. She has written two books, “Girl Code” (2014) and “Dear Woman: A Letter to My Daughter” (2017). Her new book, “Girl Code: The New Rules for Girls,” is coming out on May 15. In this book, Cole shares her rules for girls that she’s learned throughout her life as a daughter, sister, girlfriend, and mother.
Cole says the key to raising strong girls is setting clear boundaries and expectations from the start. She advocates for girl-led households where mothers set the rules and daughters know their place in the family hierarchy. Girls need to be taught how to take care of themselves—both physically and emotionally—and not put all their trust in others. Girls also need to learn about self-confidence and self-esteem; too often they are told they are not good enough or that they should be someone they’re not.
Cole encourages girls to speak up when something isn’t going well in their lives or when they feel mistreated by someone else. She believes that girl power can be unleashed when women unite together and support each other no matter what our individual experiences have been.
