Board of Education decision, the federal government implemented desegregation orders and closely monitored integration in schools. In 2003, a federal judge lifted these orders, and the schools in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, have since become majority-minority. The schools in Baton Rouge are now 81 percent black, and 89 percent minority overall. Three communities have since separated from East Baton Rouge Parish.
The Knowledge is Power Program or KIPP, is a charter school operator that is planning to open a school in Baton Rouge in 2022. Though the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board initially rejected the application of KIPP, the company has a history of success in the South and has already opened campuses in New Orleans and Arkansas. The current climate in the region is favorable for charter operators, and KIPP was attracted to the region by the work of NSBR.
BASIS Materra is a public charter school campus that serves students in kindergarten through seventh grade. This school is part of the nationally renowned BASIS model.
