Introduction

Some people might know Gabriel Kuhn as a prolific writer. Others may recognize him as the former Editor-in-Chief of Arcade: The Videogame Magazine. What few people know is that he was co-founder, with Daniel Patry, of the videogame studio Lucid Dreaming in 2012. Patry had been programming games for over 20 years at this point, while Kuhn had been writing about them for more than 15. But both found themselves disillusioned by the increasingly harsh realities of life in the videogames industry; they had made two major indie games together when they decided to call it quits and start something new. They wanted to create their own worlds, not just inhabit someone else’s – but they wanted to do it on their own terms. I’m tired, said Kuhn one day, of always having someone telling me what I can’t do.
