Amazingly, Euro Wooden Pallet have been used to move products since Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt. In terms of Western history, the first patent was submitted in 1924.
Despite seeming to have existed for ages, container ships and “juggernaut” lorries didn’t really take off until the 1960s. In 1961, a standard for Euro pallets was established.

The Euro pallet, also known as the EUR pallet or EPAL pallet, is an interchangeable transport pallet that complies with part 1 of DIN EN 13698 and is available all over the world under the Euro pool exchange system.
The UIC (International Union of Railways) standard and, subsequently, the EPAL (European Pallet Association) regulations ensure that Euro pallets are uniform worldwide.
The pallet is sometimes known as a “four-way pallet” because a forklift or pallet truck may pick it up and move it from one of its four sides.
Standard Euro Pallet Sizes
There are various “standard” pallet sizes, and different businesses build them in 0multiple ways.
The American Grocers Manufacturers’ Association 40″x48″ (1016x1219mm) and the European 800x1200mm EUR 1 pallet are now the two most common.
A 1000x1200mm metric equivalent of the American pallet was finally given the name EUR 2 in the UK.
These sizes make sense in specific ways. Euro pallets are made to fit through doors and into trains (the typical door being 850x2000mm).
Due to their long history of maritime commerce, the US and UK’s standard pallets fit inside ISO shipping containers with the least extra room (3–5% vs 15% using EUR 1).
A EUR 3 standard is also accepted by ISO and ECU authorities. This is the same size as EUR 2, but it is built with width and length in opposite directions. Frequently, the EUR 3 has a more excellent load-bearing capability (1920 kg instead of 1470kg).
The EUR 1 is divided into the EUR 6 (800600), a 600400 quarter pallet, and so on.
Although there are plans to develop shipping containers compatible with EUR-pallets, there will still be a wide range of sizes.
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has recognized six pallet dimensions out of the many pallet sizes available, and these dimensions are now universally accepted as the standard pallet size worldwide.

The deck boards are intended to be used to raise two-way pallets. The standard 48″x40″ North American pallet, the GMA pallet, has stringers of 48 inches and deck boards of 40 inches and was standardized by Grocery Manufacturers Association. A typical hardwood pallet measuring 48 inches by 40 inches by six inches (122 cm by 102 cm by 15 cm) weighs between 33 and 48 lb. It has a static load-bearing capability of 3 short tons (2.7 long tons; 2.7 t) and a dynamic load-bearing capacity of 1 short ton (0.89 long ton; 0.91 t) (15 to 22 kg). Plastic pallets come in a range of weights, from 3 to 15 pounds (1.4 to 6.8 kg) to 300 pounds for more significant types (140 kg). Standard GMA pallets have a weight capacity of 460 pounds (210 kg).
GMA pallets are approximately 6 12 inches (170 mm) tall and weigh 37 pounds (17 kg). Their deck planks are 5/16 inches (7.9 mm) thick and 3 14 inches broad (83 mm). Pallet sizes with varied weight capabilities are available.
Three wood stringers that are nominally 4 inches (102 mm) high by 3 inches (76 mm) broad timber is attached to the heavy-duty IPPC pallets, which measure about 44 inches (1,118 mm) wide by 48 inches (1,219 mm) long and weighs around 135 pounds (61 kg). In Europe and Russia, their deck is covered with 1.18-inch-thick plywood and painted blue.
The stiff stringers of four-way pallets and pallets for large loads (or general-purpose systems that may have heavy loads) are preferable for lifting. Compared to two-way pallets, these pallets are often more severe, more oversized, and more sturdy.
Users of pallets desire pallets that are simple to move between structures, stack and fit in racks, are reachable by forklifts and pallet jacks and work in automated warehouses. Pallets should be packed firmly within intermodal containers and vehicles to avoid transportation by air.
Pallet dimensions are not standardized in any way. Around the world, businesses and organizations use hundreds of different pallet sizes. Pallet manufacture is governed by no single-dimensional standard. However, a few distinct sizes are frequently employed.
Composition
The Euro pallet has defined dimensions of 120 x 80 x 14.4 centimetres. It is a repeatedly used pallet held together by 78 to 81 nails (L x W x H). Each pallet has a surface area of 0.96 cm2. Its specific weight is between 20 and 24 kg (depending on wood moisture content).
In addition, the standard specifies the only three types of wood that can be used to make these pallets: fir, birch, and maple.
The point and area loads are limited to 1000 and 2000 kg, respectively. Overloading might damage and decrease capacity, making the pallet ineligible for use in the Euro pool exchange system.
