MacBook 12in M7

I have spent the last four years looking at the new MacBook 12in M7 and weighing up if I should get one or not. So I’ve done my research and I’m going to share with you what I know about this laptop and whether you should go out and buy it or not! Read on…

A Note About the Unibody Design
Apple has always been on the forefront when it comes to design and their newest Macbook, the 12-inch Retina Display with Touch Bar (M7), is no exception. The sleek unibody aluminum construction is lightweight and gorgeous, but it also has some serious drawbacks. First of all, being aluminum means that your laptop will be more conductive than a plastic casing would be. Not only does this mean that your battery will drain faster, but it also makes you more susceptible to electric shocks. Secondly, while the sleekness of this case is beautiful and aesthetically pleasing, it’s very fragile and difficult to fix if anything were to happen to it. Lastly, because there’s nothing protecting the bottom half of your screen from touching whatever surface you place it on, chances are high for scratches or abrasions.

How To Care For Your New Macbook
#1: Don’t put it in a case.
#2: Don’t get it wet. Spilling a drink on your Macbook is bad enough, but if you put it in a case, that liquid can seep into the keyboard, which will ruin it.
#3: Always use a screen protector. The glass surface of your Macbook is more susceptible to scratches and breakage than most other devices because of its thinness and lack of protection against hard impacts. Screen protectors are designed specifically for this reason—they provide a layer of plastic or tempered glass between your device’s sensitive display and anything else it might come in contact with. Screen protectors also keep fingerprints and dirt off the display while making it easier to clean with an alcohol wipe or cloth. If applied properly, they can prevent cracking from drops as well as smudging from oil buildup around keys.

What’s Included With The Purchase?
You will get a MacBook Pro, with an Intel Core i5 processor. You also get 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of SSD storage. This is a great way to get into the Apple ecosystem at a relatively low price. The downside is that you don’t have an SD card slot for transferring files onto your computer without having to plug in your phone. It also doesn’t come with a touchbar, which may be good or bad depending on your opinion on them.

The Actual Installation Process
The installation process for the USB-C dongle is a bit complex and not for novice users. The first step is to download an app called USB C Docking. Next, plug in your dongle into your laptop. Third, open up the USB C Docking app and follow the instructions on screen. Finally, once your device has been identified by macOS as a display, close out of that window and launch Display Setup Utility. From there, go to your Displays tab and click Detect Displays. You will see two screens show up in this window: one with the name of LG 4K TV and one with Generic PnP Monitor. Select Generic PnP Monitor (the other monitor will still be named LG 4K TV) then press OK.

Final Thoughts
The new MacBook 12in M7 is an incredible machine, but it has a fatal flaw: it’s not upgradable. This means that if your computer breaks or becomes outdated after a year or two, you’ll have to buy a whole new computer. You can always spend more money for a device that lasts longer, but there’s no way around this issue with the MacBook.
Don’t let this stop you from buying a laptop though! Consider these points when making your decision and choose what works best for you. If you need a device that will last awhile and don’t want to worry about repairs or upgrades in the future, then go with another laptop model such as Apple’s 13 inch Macbook Pro with Touch Bar. If you want something that will work well on-the-go and are willing to replace your computer every few years, then go ahead and get the MacBook 12in M7!
