Looking for small bathroom ideas that will make the entire space seem larger? A lack of square footage, limited natural light, and the number of fixtures to squeeze in make a small bathroom one of the most challenging spaces to decorate.

But if done right, the entire room can appear brighter and more spacious. And no, you won’t have to spend a million bucks to carve a window into the wall (or call on something retro, like glass bricks).

These small bathroom ideas go beyond making the most of available space and prove that bold design elements can be at home in even the smallest of rooms. Here are the best ways to make small (sometimes windowless) bathrooms less cramped and more pleasant. Your small bathroom may be your next favorite room.

1. Use a smart layout design to make a smaller bathroom feel bigger

Considering an upgrade for a hall bath or a smaller master bath? Moving walls is a great way to add more space, but it’s not always the most practical solution.

Simply rethinking the design and layout of a small bathroom during a home remodel is an effective way to make the space feel more spacious. Continue reading for some of our favorite strategies and tricks for making the most of a small bathroom.

2. Keep your colors light and bright

A soft mint green hue reflects natural light from the window. The space surrounding the freestanding tub makes the room feel more open, as does the lightweight curtain fabric, which lets in maximum light.

3. Double down on dark color

It is a good idea to paint small bathrooms [usually rooms without windows] a dark color. It gives depth and gives the impression of a bigger space. The hue will simultaneously impart a great night sky effect and also bounce what little light you have around space. Doing so will also draw attention to the lamps.

4. Mirror a wall

Instead of just hanging one over the vanity, consider mirroring an entire wall of your small bathroom. Light reflection and pattern (and sometimes that open door) will do just as good a job as a window. If mirroring an entire wall doesn’t work for your space, you can simply add multiple mirrors to one wall.

 5. Go for a glass shower door

If you’re starting your small bathroom design from scratch or remodeling, consider ditching the curtain entirely. We also recommend glass shower doors in a small bathroom, as it will help open up the space. The slightly more adventurous might even consider not having a shower door (in that case, good drainage is prudent).

6. Backlight the mirror

This can be a sleek, modern way to amplify light. If you don’t have room for sconces or just want a more minimalist look.

7. Take on tile

Mosaic tiles are a durable way to add impact and can be used from floor to ceiling. On the bathroom walls, the designer favors one-by-four and two-by-six floor tiles, which are also less expensive.

8. Raise the curtain

If you have the luxury of choosing where your shower curtain goes, taking the fabric all the way up beyond the usual height of the tub. Extending the curtain almost to the ceiling will definitely lengthen the walls, adding that the higher the bathroom ceiling, the more it will help.

9. Install a pocket door

Although this trick requires a bit more manpower, replacing the door with a pocket door that hides in the wall can open up space for additional storage. You’ll just need to find another place to hang your towels.

10. Keep the floor clear

Covering the floor with vanity or storage bins can create a tight space, not to mention tripping hazards. A floating pedestal or sink keeps the floor uncluttered, and installing floating storage will help keep everything you need within easy reach.

11. Try an extensive wall covering

You may think you need a small motif, but it’s actually better to go big. “Medium- and large-scale wallpapers and tile designs can make a space feel larger,” explains James. Whether you choose large tiles or a custom pattern, it’s up to you; she says both will “give illusionary scale in tight spaces.”

12. Extend bathroom tiles to shower

Continuous lines give more depth to any space. Install the same tile on your floor and shower to get this look in your bathroom. The effect is a continuous surface that makes the entire room appear larger.

13. Upgrade your bathroom accessories

Patterned towels along with anthracite towel radiators, vintage rugs, and sophisticated lighting also add touches of character. “Lighting and decorations for the bathroom are like pearls in the room. “Use them to bring a bit of glamor to space,” says the Los Angeles-based interior designer, Sarah Samuel.

14. Rethink your sink

If you’re designing your small bathroom from scratch (or remodeling it), consider a small corner sink. There is no rule that says you have to have a full-size standard sink. A corner sink does the job just as well, plus it gives you plenty of space and less to clean.

15. Choose compact pieces

Oversized vanities and block tubs may look right at home in a larger bathroom, but they can make a small bathroom feel claustrophobic.  To save space, install compact toilets and sinks or explore floating versions. If a bathtub is a must, consider a Japanese soaking tub to add serenity without taking up square footage.

16. Use closed storage to stay organized

Scattered bottles and tubes on countertops are guaranteed to distract from even the most beautiful bathroom. Samuel suggests closed storage, like a linen closet or vanity with drawers and doors, to keep things tucked away.
