The Bald Eagle is the symbol of the nation of the United States since 1782 and an emblem of spiritual significance for indigenous people for much longer than that. The majestic birds aren’t actually hairless, but their white-feathered heads shine in stark contrast to their chocolate-brown bodies and wings. Watch them fly in a solitary manner and chasing other birds in search of their food or gathering by the thousands in winter. Bald Eagles are now protected and have recovered their status as endangered birds due to hunter-killer pesticides.

Rather than do their own fishing, Bald Eagles often go after the fish of other species. Bald Eagles chase a smaller Osprey searching for prey, until it is dropped in midair by the smaller bird. The eagle will then fly over the fish. It is possible that a Bald Eagle may even snatch an entire fish right from Osprey’s jaws. Bald Eagle pirates may also affect fish-catching mammals, even humans.

Wild Turkey might have been the U.S. symbol if Benjamin Franklin had been elected president. Franklin in 1784 dissented from the national bird due to its predatory tendencies as well as its vulnerability to being attacked by small birds. He wrote that he was disappointed by the Bald Eagle being selected to represent his country. He is a Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get his Living honestly. … Besides the fact that he’s the most infamous Coward”The little King Bird not as big as an Sparrow is a ruthless savage who attacks the man with ferocity and drives him out of the District.”

Sometimes, even the national bird isn’t the only one who needs to be let loose. Bald Eagles are known to play with plastic bottles, and other objects that were put into use as toys. One person who observed the play saw six Bald Eagles passing sticks to each other in midair.

In St. Petersburg, Florida, the biggest Bald Eagle nest measured 2.9m in diameter and 6.1m tall. Another famous nest — located in Vermilion Ohio — was designed like a wine glass and weighed nearly 2 metric tons. It was in use until the tree was felled.

Immature Bald Eagles spend the beginning of their lives exploring nomadic areas of vast territories and can travel for hundreds of miles each day. A few young birds from Florida have wandered to the north, as far as Michigan, and birds from California have landed in Alaska.

Bald Eagles occasionally hunt cooperatively, with one individual flushing prey toward another.

Bald Eagles can live for an extremely long time. The oldest known bird living in the wild was 38 years old at the time it was struck and killed by a car in New York in 2015. The bird was banded in the same state in 1977.
