Heptanoic acid is produced by castor oil. The decomposition of the castor oil methyl ester is carried out in the presence of water vapour at 500-600°C to form undecanoic acid methyl ester along with oenanthal. Oenanthal is oxidised further to produce the final product heptanoic acid.
