Some Male Gymnasts Want to Compete Shirtless at the Olympics
At this year's 2016 Olympics in Rio, all eyes are on Team USA's gymnastics competitors — but, usually, only the women. And it's natural the male gymnasts are feeling a little left out. Luckily, the Wall Street Journal reports some male gymnasts have a pretty genius strategy to get more attention: pure objectification.
At this point, even if a male gymnast wins a medal, he likely won't get a huge fan following or lucrative endorsement deals after the Olympics. But perhaps if they just wore less clothing, people would tune in more. "Maybe [we should] compete with our shirts off," U.S. gymnast Sam Mikulak told the newspaper. "People make fun of us for wearing tights. But if they saw how yoked we are maybe that would make a difference.
Fellow Team USA gymnast Jake Dalton stated the obvious when he explained people obsessed with working out look to them as inspiration. "We have great physiques," he said. "Incredible physiques." Whenever the U.S. men's team posts an Instagram without their shirts, commenters go crazy — and for good reason and they get huge responses from women from all over the world. So we can just wait for the new rule to plug in to Olympics, till then we can just imagine and follow them on Twitter. ;)
