Showcased at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo as a concept, the production-ready version of the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross made its debut at the recently concluded IIFA awards. Already on sale in the European markets, the S-Cross will finally enter India in July 2015. That said, the India-bound model has gone through several mechanical and design changes that make it compatible for all sorts of terrains in India. Interestingly, the S-Cross will not carry Suzuki or Maruti Suzuki's badge. People interested in buying the S-Cross can now pre-book the car with a token amount of Rs. 51,000 at any Maruti Suzuki dealership across India. Though, the official bookings are likely to begin by the end of this month.

Despite being a crossover, the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross will compete against the compact SUVs such as Nissan Terrano, Renault Duster and Hyundai Creta. With almost 90 percent localised components, the vehicle is expected to be priced quite aggressively.

Design and Features

The vehicle looks largely similar to the SX4 S-Cross concept unveiled at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo. Though it has gone through several design changes that now make it more compatible for Indian roads. One such change will come in the form of increased ground clearance that makes it sit higher than its European counterpart. Other key exterior elements are plastic cladding all around the body, roof rails, 16 inch alloy wheels, etc which make it look quite rugged. The cabin of the car will take its design inspiration from other Maruti Suzuki cars including the Swift and Ciaz. The S-Cross is likely to feature leather seats, all black interiors with silver inserts, engine start-stop button, steering mounted audio controls, SmartPlay infotainment system, reverse parking camera, 2 Din audio system and automatic climate control. That said, all these features might come with the more expensive trims.

Safety features on offer could be anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD) system, hill assist, etc.

Engine & Transmission Options
The Maruti Suzuki S-Cross will initially be launched with two diesel engines - 1.3-litre and 1.6-litre - both of which have been sourced from Fiat. At a later stage, the company might launch it with a 1.4-litre petrol unit. While the 1.3-litre diesel unit is the same that does duty on the Ciaz, Swift, Swift Dzire and Ertiga, the 1.6-litre multijet diesel unit has been imported especially for the Ciaz.

1.3-litre diesel - 89bhp, 200Nm
1.6-litre diesel - 118bhp, 320Nm

Expected Launch - July, 2015

Expected Price Range - Rs. 7.50 lakh - Rs. 12 lakh (Ex-showroom)
